A Binyeo is a traditional Korean hair ornament that originated during the Three Kingdoms period of Korea. It is believed that women of the Silla Kingdom used Binyeo to adorn their hair. Traditionally, Binyeo were crafted from a variety of materials. Members of the royal family and the aristocracy wore pieces made of gold, silver or jade, often embellished with exquisite gemstones, while ordinary people used Binyeo carved from wood or made from animal bone. As such, the Binyeo was not merely a decorative hair ornament but also a symbol of the wearer's social status.

During the Joseon Dynasty, the last royal dynasty of Korea, which lasted for more than 500 years, women wore Binyeo both in everyday life and on special occasions, including wedding ceremonies. During this period, different styles of Binyeo also reflected the wearer's age and were associated with particular seasons.

Once regarded as an important form of traditional Korean decorative art, the Binyeo has largely disappeared from everyday life and is now seen mainly in historical dramas and films. With its decline, an important part of Korea's cultural heritage has also faded from public awareness. Preserving our heritage is our responsibility—not only as descendants of those who created it, but also for future generations.

Through The Binyeo Collection, I reinterpret this traditional ornament from a contemporary perspective, bringing together historical craftsmanship and modern artistic expression. I hope that those who encounter my work will be inspired to learn more about Korean traditions and to reflect on the importance of preserving, revitalising and sharing the cultural heritage and artistic legacy passed down by our ancestors.
